I originally found this on Steam, but ended up getting it for the Switch. It’s a roguelike that is a first person implementation of something like Nethack. It reminds me of Doom, not just from its pixel graphics and blocky level design, but also it’s just concerned with the X and Y axes, not Z. You can look up, but you won’t be climbing any stairs.
Despite its pixel graphics, this is a pretty unforgiving dungeon crawler, another similarity to Nethack. You start out by picking a name, race and class for your character. The default race is human, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the other options were all monsters, as opposed to the standard collection of fantasy demihumans.
Once you have your character, you start at level one of the dungeon and begin working your way down. Your goal is to defeat the Mad Baron who has cast a curse on these mines and the town above. You start out as a level 1 character, and each time you die, the dungeons reset and you get kicked back to the start as a level 1 character again. Along the way, you’ll level up and find loot to equip, but you lose all of that when you die, too.
I played for a bit last night, and the farthest I got was a level three character who made it to the second floor of the dungeon. The baron released a Minotaur, but I didn’t get to see it because a swarm of skeletons took me out, mostly because I had equipped a cursed shield that I couldn’t put down, so I couldn’t hold a torch, so I didn’t see them coming. Like I said, a little unforgiving, but it is a good bit of fun.

I went with the Switch version, but there’s also a version on Steam for PC and Mac. The game supports co-op play, either locally or online; if you play single-player, you’ll run into NPCs who will join your party and fight with you. There is some sort of global online match-making service that runs through Epic which I didn’t check out because my Epic credentials are all messed up right now. Long story short, I let my kid play Fall Guys and now Epic thinks I’m ten years old. But I haven’t logged into Epic on the Switch, so I might just create a new account.
